Al and Iris Engler

In almost 40 years on Navigator staff, Al has served in a number of roles including Seattle City Leader, Director of Army Ministries and as a Field Director and Senior Vice President of The Navigators. He has ministered in a variety of contexts both in the US and overseas. Al has a passion to develop lifelong disciplemakers in their everyday relationships and places.

“My heart’s desire is to help people successfully live out the love and life of Jesus right where they live, work and play,” Al says. “I believe that God is planting these men and women next door to everyone, and the Navigators want to serve them as they advance the Gospel through their natural life networks.”

Al came to know and follow Christ while serving in the military. He began serving with the United States Army in 1975 and trusted Christ in Germany in 1980. During his time in the Armed Forces, he served in several intelligence and logistics roles, and was deployed during Operation Desert Storm. He continued to serve in the Army National Guard until 2007 when he retired as a First Sergeant. Al has been on staff with The Navigators since 1986.

Al and his wife, Iris, have pioneered community-focused ministries in the United States and Europe.  Al and Iris have two adult children and a son-in-law. They currently live in Lacey, Washington, where they enjoy spending time outdoors when it's not raining.
